What I couldve been

This week, in sociology, we learned about sociological imagination and sociological mindfulness. I see how Mr. Sal incorporates community service in this unit because only real life experiences can give you a wake up call that you affect people you encounter. Although I'm mostly speaking for myself because I know for a fact that I'm genuinely selfish until that one day when I was forced to do community service in fourth grade. That day, my perspective of the world changed. Visiting this place for handicapped kids, I learned to understand other peoples situation. Learning that there are forces beyond their control that made them who they are, and realizing the biggest picture that the world doesn't revolve around me. I mean its one thing to grow up in a bad environment, but these kids were born with no hands, feet, etc. It was out of everyones reach. It got me thinking that if I wasn't around, would the people around me be the same? and if some of the people I grew up with I had never met would I be what I am right now? These are mind boggling questions that I had since my epiphany. Yes, our environment, as we grow up, is what molded us to become what we are right now. As of now, I am convinced that I am what I am today because of destiny. The silly string of fate that had me grow up in the Philippines then move to the U.S. Because in reality, I would be a whole different person if I stayed in my homeland, or would have I stayed spoiled and selfish if I wasn't born in the Philippines? Who knows what i could've been.

  1. I can relate to how you felt, because when I was younger, I took many things for granted and just thought people complained because they needed to. It's really nice to think differently for a change, and I hope those in need get their help.

  2. Wow, great to hear that you learned about this so young; many people don't get to experience something like that until they are much older. It's crazy to think that if one thing in your life didn't happen, you would be such a different person, such as if you had not moved to the US.

  3. How lucky to have such a valuable experience at such a young age. Some people don't learn that lesson until they are much older, or never!
